The original festivity hall was transformed into a cinema during the interwar period, but circulation and logistics have since proven far from optimal for its current operation.

This study sets out to establish a clear framework, both visually and textually, to guide the building’s renovation and to strengthen its visibility and relevance for the citizens of Ghent. From the outset, the City of Ghent was closely involved in the process, ensuring broad support and a shared vision for the future of this cultural landmark.

A carefully selected, multidisciplinary team was essential. Experts in integrated techniques, theater technologies and acoustics joined as co-authors of the project, contributing from day one to ensure a fully integrated design process.

Key outcomes from the study

Improved vertical circulation
A new central staircase connects all levels to create a clear and airy flow throughout the building.

Special conditions were reviewed and addressed for each hall to ensure optimal integration of technical systems and acoustics.

Enhanced ground-floor activation
The cinema café opens up to the street to invite visitors in and encourage enthusiasts to linger after films.

Flexible rooftop program
The top floor will be designed as a multifunctional space for workshops, co-working, pop-up dining or exhibitions. These areas can operate independently or together, with their own facilities and entrances, fostering synergy with the cinema’s activities.
