This study sets out to establish a clear framework, both visually and textually, to guide the building’s renovation and to strengthen its visibility and relevance for the citizens of Ghent. From the outset, the City of Ghent was closely involved in the process, ensuring broad support and a shared vision for the future of this cultural landmark.
Improved vertical circulation
A new central staircase connects all levels to create a clear and airy flow throughout the building.
Enhanced ground-floor activation
The cinema café opens up to the street to invite visitors in and encourage enthusiasts to linger after films.
Flexible rooftop program
The top floor will be designed as a multifunctional space for workshops, co-working, pop-up dining or exhibitions. These areas can operate independently or together, with their own facilities and entrances, fostering synergy with the cinema’s activities.
OYO-MEET are involved in the next stage by translating these findings into a coherent design for the renovation of the cinema, from concept to completion. Through cocreative process the cinema owners, the City of Ghent and the neighbours are involved.
